Attention BookTok: Emily Henry's Funny Story Is Getting the Movie Treatment

View Date:2024-12-24 03:38:42

Emily Henry is giving her book lovers a reason to head to the theaters.

The bestselling author is officially bringing her latest novel Funny Story to the big screen with the help of Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company, the production companies confirmed in a statement to E! News July 9.

And Emily will be part of the project in more ways than one. In fact, the 33-year-old will write the screenplay and serve as an executive producer for the adaptation of the book, which has sold over 800,000 copies since its April 2024 release.

As for what fans can expect to see unfold when watching the film in theaters? As the statement put it, the romance tells the story of librarian Daphne when she gets dumped by her fiancé Peter after realizing "too late that he loved his childhood best friend, Petra."

"Stranded in her ex’s lakeside hometown, Daphne becomes roommates with Petra’s ex, Miles," the statement continued, "and despite their differences, they form a tenuous friendship and a plan to get back at…or with their exes."

This isn’t the first time one of Emily’s books have gone from script to screen. Back in June, it was announced that Henry's 2022 novel Happy Place will be made into a TV series under Jennifer Lopez’s Nuyorican banner. Plus, the author's 2021 best-seller People We Meet on Vacation and 2020's Beach Read are being adapted into films.

But for now, Emily is remaining pretty tight-lipped on the finer details regarding all of her forthcoming projects.

"They’re all still in early-ish phases of development," she told Associated Press in an interview published April 23. "So, hopefully more soon."

Emily added, "The movies are all going to be something very special. And I think that they’ll have the heart of the books, hopefully."
